Swimming works the entire body, improving cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, endurance, posture and flexibility all at the same time! Swimming is a healthy activity that can continue for a lifetime. Patients can receive the benefit of a two hour land workout in only thirty minutes of water activity.
The cardiovascular system in particular benefits because swimming improves the body’s use of oxygen without overworking the heart. There are psychological benefits to swimming as well. The mind can wander during a relaxed swim while focusing on the rhythm of the stroke. This form of meditation can help one gain a feeling of well-being leaving the participant refreshed and ready to go on with the rest of the day.At the Alpena County Plaza Pool we offer several programs for swimmers and non-swimmers. Senior Fitness, Splash Aerobics. Aqua Chi, Water Walking/Running, Rehabilitation and Social Swimming.
Our pool is a warm 88 degrees. The National Arthritis Foundation recommends water exercises and therapy to be performed in water 84-89 degrees.- Private changing rooms are available.
- Certified Life guards are staffed for each session of programming.
- A new music system offers motivation and relaxation for our participants (music is program specific).
- Senior citizens receive unbeatable discounts. Example: A senior punch card with ten visits and no expiration costs only $8.50. That’s .85 cents a swim!

Senior Fitness:

Offers a safe, comfortable, and effective way for seniors of all fitness levels to get in shape or keep in shape. This class is ideal for patients looking or a low impact workout! Senior Fitness is taught by our Senior Instructor with over thirty years of experience in physical education. Eve Phillips has developed a low impact aerobics and water fitness program that increases flexibility and balance.Splash Aerobics

Skip the sweat bands and the high priced tennis shoes. Try a refreshing aerobic workout! Splash Aerobics is a medium to high intensity patients will receive a great exercise routine without the weight of their body pounding with each move.Aqua Chi

Aqua Chi is a water class based from Ti Chi. Ti Chi is often called “meditation in motion” because of its slow, graceful movements. It has been around since 500 BC. People of all ages and fitness levels can do Aqua Chi. It’s a gentle, yet very effective workout. Health benefits include weight loss, muscle toning, lowering of blood pressure. Strengthens lungs, circulation, promotes proper breathing and reduces headaches. Aqua Chi fights depression and stress. It promotes better concentration and focus. Aqua Chi is good for people who suffer from back pain, arthritis, post mastectomy patients, firbomielgia, and orthopedic problems.NEW Water Walking/Running, Rehabilitation and Social Swimming

Buoyancy and water resistance are the perfect combination for low impact muscle building or for continued physical therapy. This program allows for patients to continue their learned physical therapy exercises (all necessary equipment is available) or those who choose can use this time as a wonderful social outlet while performing their desired exercises.The Plaza Pool recognizes the unique opportunity Health Care Providers have in referring their patients to specific exercise programs.
